Description

Agatized coral is a fascinating natural gemstone formed when ancient coral fossils are gradually replaced with silica (the same mineral family as quartz and agate). Over millions of years, groundwater rich in dissolved silica seeps into the porous structure of dead coral. This process—called permineralization—slowly replaces the original organic material while preserving the intricate coral patterns.

As the silica crystallizes, it often forms agate, giving the fossil its beautiful swirls, bands, and translucent qualities. The result is a stone that still retains the original coral’s natural shapes and textures, but now has the hardness and durability of quartz.

Most agatized coral dates back to ancient seas, commonly from periods like the Miocene Epoch, when coral reefs flourished in warm, shallow waters. Over time, tectonic activity and erosion bring these fossilized treasures to the surface.
